I hate winter!

January 4 /09

Ok, that's it. I've decided I hate winter!! I tried to like it. I really did. But I hate it.
n
No wonder birds fly south and bears hibernate. Even the squirrels and rabbits are hiding. And I know why Beauty and Rugrat look out the patio window and run away yowling.
n
Winter is cold and blustery and it makes me shiver. And the salt they throw on the sidewalks makes my toes itch. And try biting into a snowball. It just melts and slides right out of your mouth. Besides, snowballs make my muzzle turn pink so I look like a girl. But the worst is ..... there are no sticks!
n
Tonight on my walk, I saw my favourite tree at the park - the one I like to pull branches from in the summer - and I got an idea. I thought if all my sticks are buried under the snow, I'll just snap a branch off the tree and make one. Yeah!

nI bit into a branch and tugged and tugged.

I yanked the branch down but it was just a skinny little twig. I definitely could not make a decent stick out of it.

nSo I tried again. Yank. Yank. It was very hard work. I was so pooped.

nn

Finally. A branch I could work with.

n

So I started turning it into a stick. I whittled it down to a nice size. Nothing to be hugely proud of, but respectable enough to take home and show Papa.

n

There it was - a stick in winter! Whoa, was I lucky!

NOT!

Just as I was picking it up, it started to crumble. The more I tried to hold onto it, the smaller it got.

nn

Then it just disintegrated and disappeared right into the snow. I couldn't believe it. Was I mad. Grrrr. I'm not one to give up easily but by this time, I was practically frozen solid. So before my drool turned to icicles, I left.

All I could think of all the way home was how much I wish it was summer so I could do some real, honest-to-goodness stick hunting. I kept thinking about all the nice big sticks I am so proud to carry home in the summer, holding my head high and feeling so glad to be a dog.

Notice I don't have my scarf on. I lost it in my frenzy to pick up the stick, so Mama and I had to trudge all the way back to the park to get it. And will you just look at my face? Totally covered in snow. I got some up my nose and it made me snort something awful. I was miserable.

After I got home, I saw this cartoon:

Geez, that could have been me. Maybe this should put things into perspective. I'll have to think about it ... ok, I thought about it. I had a bad day and it could have been worse. But I still hate winter.

My pal, Dewey Dewster, just sent me this poem. It pretty much describes what winter's like for us Canucks! Thanks Dewey!

WINTER Poem

It's winter in Canada

And the gentle breezes blow

Seventy miles an hour

At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Canada

When the snow's up to your butt.

You take a breath of winter

And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful

So I guess I'll hang around.

I could never leave Canada.

I'm frozen to the ground!

Maybe you could make your way down here and live with us until your winter is over. There are lots of sticks around here and it's warm.

Maybe a nice warm coat and some booties for your tootsies would make you love winter more, Chef? You can get a coat that matches your pretty scarf! We want you to like winter! It's such fun!

Love ya lots,

Holy smokes! Your barking bloggie made the pee-wee go bonkers!

The salt on the road really stinks. You might need boots! Plus, even though it tastes good, we're not allowed to eat it, what's up with that?

Yuh, you do have to create your own sticks in the winter. Hard work, dude.

Mango

Hi, Chef...

I agree...I'm not a fan of winter either...

The snow is over my head...I can't find the grass...I don't know where to go when my Mom takes me outside...I can't "do my business" in the driveway, Can I???

I'm just confused...I wish I could hibernate until spring...

We hear your pain, Chef! What is life without a good stick? But we don't have to break them off. They just fall off trees around here. Which is great. Unless one falls on your head.

Bear says he would like to share some of his sticks with you. It is not as cold here as it is where you live. Bear wants to share.
Thanks for your nice comment for Misty!

Hi, Chef!
Hmmmm... I'd hate that kind of winter too if I'd lived there! Too much snow!
I got lots of sweaters this Christmas but here is hot now to wear them!
Time flies! Soon will be summer and you will collect all the sticks you want!
Take care

Just to let you know, friends - I DO have boots and a coat but guess what? I hate wearing them!!

We're going to try the boots one more time - they're purple - very cool. As for my coat - I'm ok with it after a while so I wear it on long walks.

I am sorry that the winter ruins your stick work Chef. Maybe you should move down here to NC. We don't have any snow (I would love to see it and play in it) and we have lots of sticks.

I'm sorry that winter has been rough on you, Chef. I'm sure glad that I don't have to deal with any of that where I live. I love hunting for sticks almost as much as I love hunting for birds and I can't imagine what it would be like not having any of those around to stalk and ambush.

I just found your blog.. and I must say Mr. Chef is a very handsome man. Me like. :) I'll stop by and visit you again. Ciao.

Chef, that's BADDDD pal. Deep snow ...itchy tooties..and NO STICKS. I'm a stick boy too so I understand.Jeepers what's a dog to do? No wonder you hate winter. I would take up Noahs offer..ask if he's room for a smaller wiry one too. We can cook up some fine stick games in the sun. Stay warm and inside is my advice in the meantime till Aire Ruby picks you up.

Aw Chef, That is such a bummer. Is your mom back at work again. Mine is. No classes, but she's always at the stupid school and leaving me home alone. One day, I will see you again.

Silly old snow and cold weather.

You need to live somewhere sunny like I do. It's much nicer, honestly, even if my fur does fall out for most of the year.

You are going to have to get a winter hobby. Sticks are truly for the summer. I do feel your pain.
