America's Next Top Dog!

Did you happen to catch the Westminster Dog Show this week? What a great bunch of dogs! I just love the Best in Show winner, a Sussex Spaniel named Ch. Clussexxx Three D Grinchy Glee. His call-name is Stump.

At l0 years old, Stump is the oldest winner in Westminster's 133-year history.

Way to go

I heard that PETA was outside Madison Square Gardens protesting the show. There are lots of people who think that behind the scenes of conformation shows, dogs are abused. These are the same people who put down the breeding of pedigree dogs. They are wrong to make sweeping judgements like that.

There are extremes in all of life's pursuits. But I happen to know that there are lots of responsible breeders out there (like mine) who breed their dogs with their health and temperment a top priority. As a matter of fact, they actually breed to weed out congenital defects. Maintaining the physical traits that the dogs were originally bred for is important too. But these people don't sacrifice health for beauty. They love their dogs. They screen their clients diligently. And they stay interested in their welfare long after they've moved on to their new owners, often for the rest of the dogs' lives.

Is breeding done for money? Yes, by backyard breeders - the ones who mate siblings, churn out puppies indiscriminately and sell them by the truckload to the highest bidders, without caring if they could provide them with loving homes. There's no money to be made by breeding show dogs. It's done for the love and respect of the breed, and in an effort to continue strong and healthy bloodlines.

Did you know that 75 per cent of shelter dogs are mixed breeds? I bet most of the purebred dogs in shelters were bought at pet stores and come from high-volume puppy mills. So why are so many people critical of show dog breeders ? The recent BBC documentary that highlighted the brutality of some breeders doesn't represent the industry as a whole. It was a documentary, with the purpose of exposing the tragic practice of inbreeding. What it didn't show was that there are far more breeders who are caring and humane and, in fact, support organizations like PETA, at least in principle.

I have yet to meet an abused show dog, up close or from afar. You just have to watch them in the ring to see their joyful spirit. Show dog owners know the importance of exercise, good nutrition, top medical care and mostly, love. If any of these dogs led lives of abuse, it would be evident in their demeanor and they'd never make it past first base.

So, if we're going to empty our shelters and put the puppy mill owners out of business, people have to educate themselves and stop buying us in pet stores. They have to find responsible breeders, and then be responsible owners.

It isn't going to happen by dressing up as the KKK and picketing Westminster.

OK, I had my rant.

On with the shows.

Bravo, Chef! That was very well said. My mom watched that Pedigree Exposed show too, and although it was horrific how some irresponsible people chose to breed their dog, that show did nothing to show that responsible breeders aim to better the breed and produce the healthiest dogs. My mom and I were so happy to see Stump win. Hoorah for Spaniels!

Oh Chef, we're so sorry to have missed out on all the news about your sores and your worries. We're crossing our paws that they will disappear and that it's nothing to worry about (we're sure that's it!).

We thought of you when the boxer was in the ring, a group 3rd no less! woot! Nobody even looked at the akita and I can't blame 'em, he wasn't the nicest we've ever seen. Oh well.

Yey stump! We rooted for him the whole way and he won!!

Love,

D&M

Goooooo Spaniels! Stump was our pick since a Cocker and ET didn't make it to the big dance. He's so cute and has a great story. He's going to make a super embassador :-)

I agree Chef. It's the ones who are breeding for money that are an issue. (Or people's family pets that really have no reason breeding but the owners think they're "KYOOT")

I watched both nights. I love all dog shows. I can't imagine where PETA gets half of their ideas. Geez!

Way to go Stump! I was hollering for the boxer to win in the working group. That one was a beauty!

How are you feeling Chef?

Stump was the Grammie pick and she was excited. We thought the boxer might have been you, but she told us it was just an impostor. She also thinks that some humans inbreed way to much or how would you get some of the wacky nonsense that goes on.

Surely ya didn't say there are breeders that support PETA, did ya????

Peta would be happy if there weren't any pet dogs or cats or other animals anywhere....we don't know any good things about PETA at all....fanatics....all of'em....

But while there are lots of responsible breeders and people showin' dogs....there are people who think they're doin' the right thin' and breed the dogs ta change the breed characteristics...Gram has a friend whose dogs rarely get outta their crates ta run 'n play....we can't believe that they're happy stayin' in crates all day long...only out occasionally....'n the last litter of 'em were all deformed 'n with heart problems....not a pretty sight 'n downright sad too....

We think somethin' needs ta be done about it and maybe they're just gonna ruin' the breed altogether...'n then they'll be sad too but it will be too late ta change it all...

Yep, there are opinions on both sides of the fence....but it's not worth fightin' about...

Hello Chef,

You said the truth. Good Breeder and Show Dog do not earn money. We just keep spending like all pet owners. Show dog and good breeder do not earn money and turn one into billionaire. It is just a hobby.
