Stick hunting / Remembrance Day

November 11 /08

On Remembrance Day we honour our war heroes - the men and women who valiantly served and sacrificed so that we could live in peace. We also hope that all men and women now serving overseas will return safely and soon.

And let us not forget the dogs of combat who have accompanied our soldiers on peacekeeping missions and in the trenches - sniffing out traps, mines and weapons caches, carrying the wounded to safety, and lifting the tired spirits of our troops.
.
They are also our heroes of war.
,

In previous wars, military dogs were often killed at the end of their working lives. Thankfully, today, many of them return home with their companions or are adopted by police departments or the families of soldiers killed in action.

November 10 /08

It was one of those weekends that was mostly cold and dreary so everyone at our house was snuggled in watching TV or reading. Papa and Daniel were glued to the Eskimos/Bluebombers game on Saturday and the Jets/Rams game on Sunday. Mama never sets foot in the den when football is on because of all the silly testosterone or something going on in the room. So she was cooking and hibernating in the livingroom with her nose in a book all weekend. And me? I did a lot of napping. On Sunday I got the sudden urge to go hunting for a stick. I couldn't have picked a worse time, what with everyone being so lazy.

Could someone please take me out to hunt for a stick?

No one budged ... Fine.

It sure didn't look like I was going stick hunting. I was lucky to even get my regular walks. No one wanted to go outside. Not for anything. Not even for me! All three of them started bargaining about who's going to take me out next. "It's your turn" ... "No, it's your turn." They even played Rock, Paper, Scissors! Geez, my bladder could have burst waiting for one of them to hoist themselves off the couch and take me out!

Please take me out! I really have to go. See?

I was exaggerating, of course, but I had to do something to shake them out of their stupor. Mama caved in and took me to the park near our house.
.
So here we are walking to the park. Did you ever see so many fallen leaves? It was a typical miserable November day in Canada. I so needed a good crunchy stick to cheer me up.

Well I never did get that stick home because it kept breaking into little pieces. Ít's just as well. Mama's talking about weaning me off my stick addicition since reading that splinters and wierd organisms can cause problems in a dog's gut. I can't imagine something that's so much fun causing such terrible problems, can you? Oh well. I can carry them around and keep building my stick pile. I just can't chew on them anymore. No problem. They make me cough anyway and once I hurt my tooth. Did you see my Remembrance Day poppy on my collar?
. /
Anyway, when I got home, I played with my new rabbit squeaky who I'll introduce you to another time. Then I had the best Angus beef/kibble dinner and leftover liver and broccoli. I got to lick the yogurt bowls and then I had two organic cookies. I went for another walk and went down for the night.
. /
All's well that ends well, right? So I guess this weekend was pretty good afterall. I hope yours was too. Have a great week.

Hi, Chef...

My Mom loves to watch you when you are collecting sticks...She thinks it's the cutest thing...

It's good that your Mom won't let you chew on them anymore...You don't want splinters or strange things in your tummy...

My weekend was pretty boring...It's getting cold & it was raining, so we just kind of did nothing...

Hi Chef!!
At least you got out this weekend, even if only for a little bit!! You look so cute in your pictures where you are begging to be let out!! We are eagerly awaiting the afternoon, since mom can't pick us up until then, so we know what it's like to be cooped up!!!

Chef you walk with such confidence! Mommy wishes that I would walk like that! I walk with confidence in my area that I have marked but when Mommy takes me over to a different area I jump at every sound! Even though Mommy shows me I'm fine & protected! Good stick hunting!

I'm glad that you finally got to go out. How can anyone resist those sad pleading eyes? My mom is just like yours in that she doesn't let me chew on sticks. I don't protest as long as I get to carry them around with me on our walks .

Chef,
"Come on down" to WestOR, we live about a coupla miles from the ocean and next to a National Forest.....boy howdy do we have sticks....with scent on them too. Only one of us chews them and she's finally over it mostly (Jolie B, an almost 10 month old boxer guuuuurl) and we can nag our parents for walkies any time 'cause we don't have any stinkin' TV..... we are special.

There is something wrong with your mama. Why would she want to change your stick addiction?

Sticks are my favorite, Chef!

That looked like a fun walk that you went on. Soooo many leaves!

Do you really like to eat liver? It doesn't sound good, but if you like it, it must be good.

It was a dull weekend for me too, Chef. I spent a lot of it napping. But sounds like you had a good meal there.

We just came from Bogie's blog, Chef! The stick is the newest inductee into the Toy Hall of Fame! You gotta go read all about it!
Happy Remembrance day! We love the poppy on your collar!

Hi Chef
I have to wait some days too-- when no one wants to go for a walkie but me. I know how you feel.

Today is our day in the U.S. to remember veterans. I forgot about all the doggie veterans.

We love playing with sticks at the dog park too. It always turns into a game of keep-away!

Your peoples are lazy. You could have sloded. And look how handsome you are on your walkie. I mean, the people climb the social scale just being seen with yourself.

My Sophie loves sticks too. We had a pecan tree that the frost killed last spring. She loved to play with the trunk of it until it finally crumbled one day. She even knocked my husband down w/it in her mouth one day. Oops, she was most ashamed but it was an accident. he he

My Chef you are handsome,I'm suprised you didn't have a trail of followers behind you on your walkie.Oh well, you had one I suppose, the servant. Not very obedient are they, playing rock paper scissors to decide who's to walk you? I mean it's a privilege you LET them...
Poppy looks good too, I wore mine too in rememberance of all the brave 2 leggededs and their doggies.

Hi Chef,

Thank you for the lovely comments on my website! You are such a handsome boy - if my heart wasn't already given to Ombre the Schnauzer, I would surely lose it to you! :)

I'm not allowed to play with sticks too - humph! - but that's ok because I am more obsessed with tennis balls. I will chase them until I drop dead - hee! hee!

Looking forward to keeping up with all your adventures!

Slobbers,
Honey the Great Dane
ps. just curious - how did you find my website? Is it coz I joined DWB? I'm still not quite sure how to make blog friends! :)

Don't worry Chef, we don't have to much snow yet. It just gives us beautiful snow at night and in the morning and it all melts by the afternoon! But it's really fun in the morning.

Thanks for Calling me a BM!! We really need to standardize these initials - you can be a HP - Handsome Prince! or maybe it should be PC - prince Charming!
